Chief Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard did not expect the house to be empty. Nor did he expect to find a body in the cellar. Buried under the flagstones are the remains of Cora Crippen, former music-hall singer and wife of Dr. Hawley Crippen. No one would have thought the quiet, unassuming Dr. Crippen capable of murder, yet the doctor and his mistress have disappeared from London, and now a full-scale hunt for them has begun. Across the Channel in Antwerp, the S. Montrose has just set off on its two-week voyage to North America. Slipping in among the first-class passengers is a Mr. John Robinson, accompanied by his teenage son, Edmund. The pair may be hoping for a quiet, private voyage, but in the close confines of a luxury ocean liner, anonymity is rare.
And with others aboard looking for romance, or violence, or escape from their past in Europe, it will take more than just luck for the Robinsons to survive the voyage unnoticed. An accomplished, intricately plotted novel, John Boyne's Crippen brilliantly reimagines the amazing escape attempt of one of history's most notorious killers and marks the outstanding American debut of one of Ireland's best young novelists. José Yuste Frías. The aim of this contribution is to prove the usefulness of the concept of paratranslation as a methodological tool for the study of paratextual elements in translation. The contribution opens with a brief introduction to the concept of paratranslation, a new term in translation studies coined by the Translation and Paratranslation research group at the University of Vigo. A detailed analysis of the typographical image of the title letters in the covers of "Dans ma maison, il y a Having described the way in which the paratextual component was disregarded by the Spanish publishing house Imaginarium, the contribution concludes by pointing out the pressing need for a permanent dialogue between translators and editors to ensure that no translation is published without its corresponding paratranslation.
Darío Luis Banegas. Beatriz Mª Rodríguez Rodríguez. This paper aims to explore the differences and similarities between translating into Spanish and into Galician, focusing on translation policy and the relationship between translation and nationalism. Literary translation into Galician, a minor language, is argued to face the power situation of translation into Spanish, a major language. To illustrate this point, translations into Galician and Spanish of some current English and American novels have been studied. He maintains that a national culture can be formed by refi ning its language through foreignizing translation. Thus, translation into Galician is supposed to challenge Spanish hegemony by enriching Galician language and culture.
Gabriel Borowski. In this article, I try to lay out clearly and discuss selected issues encountered during the translation with Eda Nagayama of Bogdan Bartinkowski's born collection of stories Dzieciństwo w pasiakach into Brazilian Portuguese. My text combines a scholarly dimension with one of self-commentary in order to offer some general reflection on the subject of the ethics of translating testimony. It consists of three parts. In the first, I provide a concise overview of the state of research on the connections between translation and studies on cultural memory.
Next, I present a series of observations relating to the emotional dimension of the process of translating Holocaust testimonies. In the final section, I compare solutions adopted in translations of Bartnikowski's memoir into German, English, Italian, Spanish, French, Russian, and Portuguese. In a summing up, I try to define the memory- re productive role of translation: reproductive, in that the translation of testimony demands a respect for the truth of the signs present in the original and their rendering in the target culture; and productive creative inasmuch as it demands of the author of the translation a series of procedures with the aim of inscribing a universal theme within the specific field of cultural memory. Lee Jerome. In this paper we share some of our reflections on the process of planning and implementing this programme from the perspectives of the Programme Director and the English Course Leader at the university and the NGOs who are supporting our work.
